This 1-day darkroom printing workshop provides an introduction to analogue black and white photography Processing and printing, it will include learning how to process your own film and create a contact sheet to take home. If you’ve always fancied having a go at shooting film and printing in the darkroom.  don’t worry if you don't own a film camera I will provide one for you to use on the day.

I have been shooting black and white film now for over 30 years and in 2012 was approached by Ilford Photo to become one of their Analogue Artisan Partners to teach film photography, processing skills, and darkroom printing, so you can rest assured that you are in safe hands. I keep my darkroom workshops to a very small group, a maximum of two people, allowing plenty of one to one time with me.

So after coffee and introductions, we will go into Saltburn by the Sea to shoot a film. Saltburn is only 5 mins from the studio, it’s a quaint Victorian seaside town on the North Yorkshire Coast and has the last remaining pier in Yorkshire alongside working water balanced funicular. We’ll spend about an hour there and the rest of the day in the darkroom.

What you’ll learn.

We’ll shoot 1 roll of Ilford black and white film. You’ll learn how to assess the correct exposure using a handheld light meter rather than the camera’s light meter, as the consistency of achieving the correct exposure every time is paramount. You’ll then spend some time getting some great shots in Saltburn.

Then it’s back to the studio and into the darkroom where you will learn about what chemicals to use and how to mix and use them to process your own film. I’ll show you how to produce a contact sheet, you will then do your own to take home. During your time in the darkroom, you will gain a greater understanding of what can be achieved using different chemistry timings and temperatures.

We use only the very best Ilford film, chemistry, and papers in our workshops.

“The artisan art of analogue black and white photography is a beautiful, engaging process taking you on an addictive path to expressing yourself and creating an individual piece of art.” Keith Moss.

This workshop would make a great gift for the photographer in your life so if you would like to buy as a gift please get in touch and I can organize a gift voucher for you.
